Design Sketching is an important skill for the Industrial Designer. It describes the practice of several techniques. On a conceptual level, one should be able to create ideas based on lots of iterations in shape, detail, color, material etcetera. On a more detailed level, it is about constructing sketches both in two and three dimensional perspectives. Then there is rendering, where faces are shaded according to the amount of light shed on them. Also different material types can be generated by the use of reflections and highlights.
In year two, I learned to do design sketching on a digital drawing pad, in particular the Wacom Intuos Pro. With this, an even higher level of detail and realism can be accomplished because of the wide variety of tools in a program such as Adobe Photoshop or Autodesk Sketchbook Pro. However, on a construction and conceptual level it is much harder and even more time consuming than drawing on paper, due to the unnatural feel and coordination between display and drawing pad. So I prefer to combine both worlds.
Below are some of my creations that I made during the Design Sketching courses, both on paper and on the Wacom pad.
