This was the second project in the first year of the bachelor Industrial Design, and was individual. The challenge was to design a citrus juicer in the style of one of the following brands: Caterpillar, Land Rover or Bodum. And in addition should have the intent to be used in a given environment. I chose for Land Rover as the brand, with the campsite as user environment because I felt the best related to them. Furthermore, the design should not only be developed visually, but also mechanically. Another requirement was that no electronics where allowed in the product.

To begin with, I had to figure out what the group of users is that would want such a product. Or what kind people would drive a Land Rover and go camping. After that, a style analysis was done on Land Rover, where I decided to look only at the more classic Defender, instead of the newer models.

After this a list of requirements had been made and I decided to go for a compact model that you could easily bring along and perhaps even fit in the cup holder of your Land Rover. So then the first ideation phase began where I made a lot of sketches from a very broad range of ideas. It was hard however, to combine this with a working mechanic system. I didn’t want to have the usual where you had to simply push a lever, so I came up with my own system.

Eventually, I worked out three concepts and subsequently chose the one with the most potential. I worked out the mechanics in more detail and made a CAD model of it with Autodesk Inventor. With that it was easier to see how such a product would realistically look like.

The result is unfortunately a little bit bigger than could fit in a cup holder, but still compact. It exists of three parts: a press that is driven by either pressing it down or turning the big ‘wheel’ on top; a filter and cone where the fruit is placed; and a compartment where the juice is stored and can be used as cup. The entire process had to be documented in a visual report, I used Adobe Indesign to do that which is where my graphic design skills could come in handy.

I really liked this project since it is exactly the reason why I am studying Industrial Design: to combine creativity, design and technic.
